SCAA welcomed one of Ventura County's most accomplished fine artists, Jem Atwater, as our guest demonstrator for our June 15th monthly meeting. Held inside the Newhall Library Community Room, the evening brought together local creatives and art lovers for an unforgettable look into the mind and technique of a true master of coastal light. A classically trained oil painter who earned her BFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Jem has become a celebrated cornerstone of the Southern California regional arts community. Beyond her active studio practice at the Pacific and Main Creative Workspace, she shares her expertise as an educator at the Santa Paula Art Museum and the Oxnard Performing Arts Center, earning widespread recognition from groups like Plein Air Ventura County. Beach Inspirations, Rigorous Technique, and Warm Humor
Our attendees were treated to a truly uncommon opportunity that went far beyond a standard technical walkthrough. As an avid surfer, Jem draws her vibrant creative inspiration directly from the movement, atmosphere, and changing light of the California coast. Her live oil demonstration highlighted a rigorous, flawless command of color theory and an acute sensitivity to coastal atmosphere. While her portfolio spans breathtaking plein air landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and custom pet portraiture, it was Jem’s down-to-earth personality that completely stole the show. Throughout the evening, she was incredibly funny, sweet, and charming, immediately making our members feel comfortable raising their hands and asking questions. Between brushstrokes, Jem openly shared intimate, inspiring stories from her own creative life, her ongoing motivations for painting outdoors, and the technical insights she has gathered through decades of dedication to the studio. Check out our photo gallery below to see Jem Atwater in action and preview the stunning coastal oil compositions built during this special public session!
