Written by Eileen Chong, SCAA Workshops Chair SCAA was absolutely thrilled to host renowned master watercolorist Fealing Lin for an exclusive, hands-on studio workshop this past May. Twelve member and guest artists spent two intensive days diving into advanced color theory, fluid brush techniques, and the secrets to capturing luminous light within transparent watercolor compositions. The immersive curriculum was brilliantly split across two distinct disciplines. On day one, Fealing demonstrated how transparent glazing and strategic layering can build rich, lifelike values within portrait paintings. On day two, the focus shifted to landscapes, where she emphasized the vital importance of establishing clear structural values across the foreground, middle ground, and background to create depth and atmosphere. Throughout the weekend, students explored how the core foundational elements of design—including line, shape, size, direction, color, value, and texture—work together to form an unshakeable composition. Most importantly, Fealing reminded the class that "messing it up" can often lead to a much better painting. Rather than striving for rigid perfection, she warmly encouraged our artists to embrace natural imperfections, which ultimately make a fine art piece far more unique and interesting. Despite the deeply focused instruction, Fealing kept the studio incredibly fun with her sharp humor and warm, welcoming demeanor, keeping our members laughing and inspired throughout the entire session.
