2010 SCAA
$1000 Scholarship Winner
Youhwa Shin
Youhwa is from Korea. She moved here with her parents and two
sisters in 2005 and entered Golden Valley High School. Her parents
came to California so their three daughters could go to school here.
Moving to California to go to school full time, learning to speak
English and getting adjusted to how the American High School classes
are conducted demanded a lot of perseverance. She majored in art and
had a natural passion for art and loved to use watercolors. Youhwa
attended all four years at Golden Valley and came into the Art Dept.
in her Junior Year and took AP Studio art in 2 D drawing and
painting. She loves to portray people. Mrs. Vernon, her art teacher,
said her parents were her teachers and at an early age they put a
paint brush in her hand and began her lessons and love for art.
Youhwa's art won the Congressional Art Award in 2009 and her art
work hung in the Cannon Tunnel in Washington's Legislative Bldg. She
went to Washington with her parents to a special reception in honor
of winning this Congressional Award. Her art work is on the current
SCV phone book. She won the Canvas Art Competition at the SCV Street
Festival in Oct. 2009 and received 1st Place in People's Choice
Award. She won Honorary Mention in the 18 and over category at the
Learning Product Expo. in Pasadena in Oct. 2009. She received her
high school degree in 2010 from Golden Valley H.S. which was a
tribute to her determination, talent, and hard work. She plans to go
to the Pasadena College of Art and Design. Her art teacher said, "Youhwa
is that student who comes along once in a lifetime. In her 17 years
of teaching she had never seen a more polished and professional
skilled young lady. |

2009 SCAA
$1000 Scholarship Winner
Colby Greening
"Always making time for
art in everyday life has been something I've done since the
beginning of elementary school. My love for the arts kept my soul
thirsting for more and as I near the end of my school career I stay
looking for the next avenue in which I get the chance to make
another piece. With a goal to become an art/ photo teacher this
scholarship is already helping satiate the costs of material and
classes at the art center in Pasadena. I want to thank everyone
involved with the SCAA for giving such a generous gift and hope I
can give back to some degree in the future."
Update - June 2010 - Colby enrolled and completed the 2010
Saturday Spring Session at Art Center in Pasadena. He took the
Advanced Photography Classes and enjoyed the beautiful college and
his two wonderful instructors. Recently he received an Outstanding
Achievement Award at Canyon High for Excellence in Photography at
Senior Recognition Night. Colby is planning to attend Weber State
University in Ogden, Utah this Fall as a Freshman. He plans and
hopes to attain a BFA with a major in Photography and minor in Art
History and Education.

Laura Nielsen
The Santa Clarita Artists' Association (SCAA) presented a $1,000 scholarship to Laura Nielsen,

in this industry” said Nielsen. “Thank you again for this
award, this is a great confidence booster for me and
